As we come to celebrate the end of an exciting year of hiking with our Annual Dinner this Saturday, we are saddened to tell you about an incident that occurred on our Welsh 3000s trip last weekend.
It is with great sorrow that we can confirm the death of one of our members, Jared Maillet, on the 20th of April 2013. Jared was one of 11 members of the club taking part in the challenge, and so far as we can tell he was last seen on route from the summit of Snowdon towards Garnedd Ugain and Crib Goch. Unfortunately, it appears that he took a significant fall and his body was found by mountaineers later that morning and recovered from below Parsons Arête by Llanberis MRT with the help of the RAF. The Coroner has opened an inquest and it is expected that the more precise circumstances will emerge as a result of that process.
While Jared had only been with the club since February, he had made an incredible impression on many of us as one of the most enthusiastic hikers we had met in a long time, as well as being one of our fittest members.
We would like to thank all those who have supported and continue to support us, particularly the Students’ Union, and we hope that the club can return to normal activities as soon as possible.
We know that this news is upsetting for a lot of people and may affect your academic work, and we encourage you to consider contacting the Students’ Union Advice Service on 0161 275 8066 or the University Counselling Service on 0161 275 2864.
