From UMHC Hiking Guide
University of Manchester Hiking Club (UMHC)
The University of Manchester Hiking Club was formed in 2004 by merging Manchester University Hiking Club (MUHC) and UMIST Hiking and Mountaineering Club (UHMC). This was necessary due to the merger of the Victoria University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST). Originally the new club was to be called the Manchester University Hiking and Mountaineering Club, but due to there being a Mountaineering Club in the University Athletic Union, "Mountaineering" was subsequently dropped from the club name.
Manchester University Hiking Club (MUHC)
The Manchester University Hiking Club (MUHC) can be traced back in the university archives to a membership card for 1964-65, bearing striking resembelence to the current membership card. The hike schedule seems remarkably similar, including the annual hotpot.
The MUHC is likely to be a direct decendent of the Manchester University Walking Club (MUWC), founded in 1935. It is possible that the the MUHC was formed during the merger of the Men's and Women's Unions in the 1950/60's, although another possibility is the MUWC may have been inactive during WW2 and reformed in the post-war years as MUHC or superceded by a seperate MUHC.
UMIST Hiking and Mountaineering Club (UHMC)
The UHMC is a direct decendent of the Technical College Hiking and Hostelling Club (TCHHC). It is known from archived correspondance that the MUHC and the UHMC were organising social events together as far back as the 1970's.
If you have information to add about either of the original clubs you can discuss it here: Talk:History of the club
