The ascent of this north ridge is a grade I scramble and is by far the most popular 3000ft summit in Wales. Tryfan is the only mountain in Wales to require sustained scrambling on the ascent.
The ascent starts straight from the A5 road, with a steep walk to start with which leads up to the upper nose where the main scrambling begins. The main difficulties lie in finding a way through the lower crags and also the upper nose.About a third of the way up there is a distinctive rock known as "The Cannon" which points 45 degrees upwards and is visible from the ground on the profile of the mountain.
Descending the South side of Tryfan requires down scrambling skills, but if you've made it to the summit you should have no problem. Then when you reach the saddle, heading west down to Lake Australia (named after its shape), will then lead you back down to the road.
Extensions
The scrambling fun can be continued by traversing Bristly Ridge up to the summit plateau of Glyder Fach.
