University of Manchester Hiking Club

From UMHC Hiking Guide

"Old Git" is an affectionate term for a person who was a member of the club, but is now no longer a student.

Some old gits are still regular hikers with the club and are an invaluable asset as they pass on their knowledge to the younger generations. They are also frequently used to provide extra transport in the form of cars for weekend trips. They can also provide expert knowledge on important things like how to make a good pot of custard.

Other old gits are generally seen on the annual pilgramage to Nethy House. Here they are said to wax lyric about the good old days, when even Andrew Nelms was still in nappies (yes, he was young once) and get the unsuspecting current committee very drunk on whisky.

Legendary Old Gits/Alumini of UHMC/UMHC/MUHC

MUHC - Anthony Dyer. Anthony wrote descriptions of the places that the club visited for the MUHC website, which formed the basis of this wiki. He has also bagged every Munro and has his own website about hiking here: Mountain Hiking.

UHMC - Conan Harrod. Conan has successfully scaled Everest in 2006(?), having previously escaped with a broken leg in the death zone on a previous attempt. Conan is known among the more recent old gits as being "the guy that is finishing the Welsh 3s way before most people are at check point 2".

UHMC/UMHC - Andrew Nelms. Andrew has been around since the dawn of time. He knows everything about the hiking club, ever. He also knows lots about steam trains (specialising in Welsh and Chinese ones), real ales and Pink Floyd.
