From UMHC Hiking Guide
The summit of Whernside forms a distinct ridge with a steep escarpment overlooking Ribblehead. It is the highest summit within the Yorkshire dales at 736m. North of Whernside, the ground settles down to high undulating moorland with great views to the north and northwest where the distant Lake District and northern Pennines can be seen. The normal walk includes one of the famous viaducts which the famous Settle to Carlisle railway line crosses over.
The south of Whernside contains some interesting limestone scenery including Kingsdale and an extensive area of limestone pavement around Twisleton scars.
