Kit List
- Boots - You MUST wear hiking boots that have sufficient ankle support - we don't allow approach shows or trainers! If you have any doubts send us a message. Also, as a rule of thumb, most shows made by fashion brands such as Dr. Martens will not be permitted.
- Trousers - Walking trousers do NOT include jeans and, if you wear jeans, we will not let you on the coach. Leggings, and light, fast drying trousers are all encouraged.
- Waterproofs - A waterproof jacket is a must. We go on hikes even if it's raining. If you have waterproof trousers, we strongly recommend bringing those along as well. OBS: Water resistant and water repellent do NOT mean waterproof. Your puffer or down jacket is not waterproof. Bring a hard shell!
- Packed Lunch and Water - You MUST pack sufficient water and food to sustain you for a full day in the hills. ALWAYS bring more than you think you will need. This is essential.
- Hat and Gloves - We strongly recommend that you always bring hat and gloves. The weather can shift quickly, and you may feel unexpectedly cold.
- Spare Layers - Always bring some spare layers. It is nice to put on an extra layer when we stop for lunch or put on dry clothes after a long day out. Make sure you keep these in a dry bag or in a plastic bag. If you get wet, you will get cold, so these are essential.
- Headtorch - In the winter, we get back to the coach after sunset. You will need a headtorch to walk in the dark.
We recognise that hiking equipment can be very expensive and not affordable for every student at UoM. Fortunately, the Students' Union Access to Recreation Grant offers up to £250 for eligible applicants, to reduce the financial barrier for activities such as ours. More information and the link to the application form can be found here.
